Severe Weather Update For Today

Wednesday, March 1, 2017 - 9:06am

There has been some talk over the past few days about the potential for severe weather around the area today and this evening. These storms have been pretty potent in the mid section of the country as we have witnessed over the past few days. There will likely be severe weather today as we have a slight risk for severe weather with the Storm Predictions Center. Now keep in mind this could and probably will be raised or lowered as we move through the day today. Right now the best thing going for us is that the skies are overcast and cloudy ahead of the storms. That will take a lot of the punch out of the storms and keep more instability from moving in ahead of the storms. I do anticipate we will see strong winds with the storms guts of 30 miles per hour or more are possible this today and this evening around the county. Hail is also a possibility. The end of the world is not coming so don't panic and make this out in your mind to be bigger than it is. Do prepare though as you could see trees come down and power outages. So plan accordingly.

As far as what we will see throughout the day and this evening lets break it down. The high today will top out at around 79º

The winds will be gusty ahead of the storms with gust around 28 miles per hour. We could see additional gust of over 30 miles per hour as storms move through. So don't be surprised if you see small trees or limbs come down with these storms. Power outages are possible as well.

I am expecting storms to start moving into the county around 7pm this evening and they will move through over about a 3-4 hour period as we head into the late evening hours. Small hail and strong winds are possible with these storms. The rainfall will be pretty limited. i am only forecasting around a quarter of an inch of rain with these storms. A few localized areas in the county could see upwards of a half of an inch.

The low tonight will bottom out at around 44º

I will keep you updated throughout the day right here and on social media throughout the day and evening as these storms approach the area and county. As always thank you for following Rowan County Weather!
