Heavy Rain and Windy Conditions Possible on Sunday

Friday, December 15, 2023 - 10:08am

A strong low-pressure system will lift north out of the Gulf of Mexico Saturday night. The low will track near the Carolina Coast Sunday into Sunday night leading to the potential for heavy rainfall and windy conditions across the western Carolinas and northeast Georgia.

Rain is expected to move in late Saturday night into Sunday night, with the peak time of heavy rain and wind conditions expected during the daylight hours Sunday.

Impacts from the system are expected to be as follows.

Isolated nuisance flooding may develop as rainfall amounts gradually increase through Sunday evening. Streams and reservoirs are still running low due to the lack of rainfall this fall. This will somewhat reduce the risk of stream flooding, but isolated stream flooding is still possible, especially along and near the I-77 corridor.

Frequent wind guard of 30 to 40 mph could bring down tree limbs or weak trees, resulting in isolated to scattered power outages may result.

Some uncertainty remains regarding the exact timing and track of the low and confidence is moderate on the impacts we will see Saturday night into Sunday night.

A more westward track would lead to higher rainfall totals and stronger wind gusts. A more eastward track would lead to lower rainfall totals and weaker wind gusts.

The thunderstorm potential looks very limited at this time, but this could change depending on the track of the low.
