A Look Back At Meteorological Summer

Tuesday, September 6, 2016 - 11:05am

Meteorological Summer runs from June 1st through August 31st. June, July & August are typically the hottest months of the year and that's how Summer records are judged. Now that we have gone through those months for this year. I thought it would be nice to look back at Meteorological Summers of the past here in Rowan County and see how this Meteorological Summer stacked up.

Average Temperature

This summer ranked 18th all time in the county with an average temperature of 78.9º tying with the summers of 2011, 1986 & 1893. –1.4º off the all time record set back in 1943

Average Rainfall

Not only was this summer hot in many ways it was also dry. As a matter of fact it was almost as dry as last summer. This summer ranked 24th driest all time in the county with only 9.15 inches of rainfall. If you are looking for a silver lining that put us +5.13 inches over the direst all time summer in Rowan County at 4.02 inches of total rainfall.

Overall for the year looking at the average temperature we are on pace for the 52nd warmest year on record for Rowan County. As far as precipitation goes we are on track for the 9th driest year of all time.

I would not worry to much about rainfall and how we are trending just remember the driest months of the year typically are now over and the fall season on average brings a good comeback in terms of rainfall. I will provide updates throughout the fall season on how we are doing in the county. As always thank you for following Rowan County Weather!
