It's been a hot summer! How does it compare?

Tuesday, August 30, 2016 - 9:07am

No question this summer has been a more humid summer compared to last summer. The real question is how does that heat compare to summers of the past?

When you take a look at over all rankings of previous summers here in Rowan County the summer of 2016 currently ranks in at 15th with an average temperature of 79º Now I hear you. I know you are saying. "Wait one second there Mr. Weatherman. Its been in the 90's a lot this summer." You are correct it has been in the 90's 40 times this summer in Rowan County to be exact. That's actually 3 less than last year at this point. we topped the 90º 43 times last year here in Rowan County. The real difference is the lows of 70º or more

Currently we are in 9th for low temps of 70º or more at night here in the county. That's only 18 off the over all record. When you factor in the elevated number of low temperatures versus the low amount of 90º or more high temperatures. That gives a pretty solid reason why our average temperature for the summer is at 79º

Now let's take a look at how that is pacing us for the year.

Currently we stand at 56th on the list for average temperatures making this a middle of the road year for warmest on record here in the county. With cooler months ahead we should see our rank drop before we close out the year.

It's been a hot year for sure but there are clear signs here that it could always be worse.
