A quick look back at how we stand for the year

Monday, August 15, 2016 - 11:23am

It's been a while since I've given an update on the state of the weather union here in Rowan County. Let's take a look back and see how we are doing. You may be surprised at what you see.

How are we doing on rainfall this summer and for the year?

To say this summer has been dry is certainly not a stretch of the imagination. With only 8.10 inches of rainfall so far this summer officially. We are currently having our 17th driest Summer season on record here in Rowan County.

Now how does that affect us for the year so far?

The sad news is not as good as we would all hope to be doing.

This is currently the 12th driest year on record for Rowan County. With only 21.30 inches of rainfall officially we have some ground to make up to get back to normal.

It's been so hot. Is this one of the hottest summers we've had?

We are certainly taking a stab at trying to break the record here in Rowan County this summer. With some time left to go and the dog days of summer still out there we are only 1.4º off the record for the hottest summer ever in Rowan County.

So this has to be one of the hottest years on record in Rowan County history right?

Don't be so quick to judge just based on the Summer months. This year overall is currently trending 60th warmest on record for the county. We have not had as many 90º or more days this year as we have had in the past. That's helping keep the yearly average pretty low. Our average temperature so far this year is only 61.1º

So how about those 90º or more days how are we doing this year versus all of the other years?

To this point we are actually 7 days behind last years 90º or more days if you count from January 1st - August 14th. Comparing that same timeframe to all of the previous years in the past we have actually not had that many 90º or more days coming in at 83rd overall.

So even I have to admit I was somewhat surprised by the information I found looking at this data. I will provide another look back at the year as we are into the Fall season to see how we are trending for the year. Right now we need rain!

As always thank you for following Rowan County Weather!
