Weekend Winter Weather Update 7pm 12/7/18

Friday, December 7, 2018 - 7:04pm

We are a little over 24 hours away from the potential of our first bout with winter weather arriving into the county this season. The blog information below will outline what we will see from this system as we move through the weekend and into the overnight hours on Monday morning.

Rain will begin to move into the county in the midday hours of Saturday. The first hour or so rain may have trouble reaching the ground due to dry cold air around the area. Evaporational cooling will cause the air to become saturated allowing the rain to reach the ground.

We will begin to see snow start to mix in with the rain in the overnight hours of Sunday morning. As we move into the morning hours on Sunday you will likely wake up to snow falling around the county.

Snow will continue and begin to mix in with sleet early Sunday morning. We could see a period of sleet and snow into the afternoon on Sunday.

During the late afternoon hours on Sunday we will begin to see a wintry mix transition to freezing rain and then all rain as we move into the evening hours on Sunday.

As we move into the overnight hours of Monday morning we will begin to see rain taper off and a lull in the action. Models are indicating snow and sleet will move back into the county early Monday morning.

Short range models are indicating around 5 inches of snowfall around the county by 1am Monday morning.

By Monday afternoon models are indicating around 10 inches of snowfall around the county. This fits into the forecast I have been providing for the past few days of 4-9 inches of snowfall around the county.

Models are also indicating around a tenth of an inch of ice accumulation around the county by 1am Monday morning. This is also lining up with my forecast of ice accumulation from a tenth to a quarter of an inch around the county.

I will continue to keep you updated right here and on social media. As always thank you for following Rowan County Weather!
