The Hazards of Flooding

Friday, February 19, 2016 - 12:26pm

With rainfall being a possibility several days next week along with accumulation chances of an inch to an inch and a half to two inches of total rainfall localized flooding could be a possibility. The big threat with localized flooding is it usually occurs with water flowing over a flooded roadway. Too many times I've seen videos shared by other forecasters and meteorologist of vehicles driving across flooded roadways after a heavy amount of rainfall has occurred in a short period of time over an area.

The dangers associated with this are as follows.

  • A mere six inches of moving flood water can knock over an adult
  • It takes just twelve inches of rushing water to carry away a small car.
  • Two feet of rushing water can carry away most vehicles.
  • You also endanger the lives of others in the vehicle with you as well as the lives of first responders who will come try to save you.

Now I can go on and on typing about this but sometimes it's just better to see what can happen for yourself. Please watch the video below and remember to Turn Around Don't Drown!

As always thank you for following Rowan County Weather!
