Our November Charity Partners Habitat for Humanity of Rowan County

Wednesday, November 1, 2017 - 9:07am

I am so pleased to announce that for the month of November Rowan County Weather will be partnering with Habitat for Humanity of Rowan County. We will be taking monetary donations on the website or you can donate by clicking here

However, you can also donate time to this charity by helping on projects. One of the joys of being involved with the Habitat ministry is seeing people have fun. Yes, fun. Habitat volunteers enjoy helping others — and it shows. It shows on their faces in the form of smiles as they work and in the subtle joy they display when they talk about the tasks that they have done. Habitat is enjoyable. Habitat volunteers are some of the nicest people you could ever meet and they like being with each other. It feels good to be in Christian service with people that you like.

Our objective is to provide an opportunity for all people to put their faith and love into action. Working together we can build affordable housing for those in need and a better community for everyone.

Construction site – ages 18 and up (due to OSHA restrictions). You may volunteer once or multiple times.

ReStore resale shop – ages 14 and up. ReStore volunteers commit to volunteering their time on a weekly basis for a 4 hour shift, either 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 pm, or 1:00 pm to 5:00 p.m. Because of the training involved for volunteering in the ReStore, it is not beneficial for us to use one time volunteers in the store.

If you want to volunteer here's how!

The spark of Habitat came to Rowan County in 1986 when Tom Hall of Habitat International spoke to a large, broadly ecumenical, racially and ethnically diverse group of about 80 individuals at First Baptist Church in Salisbury. Unfocused interest continued until November 1988 when Rev. Boyd Coursey of Rowan Helping Ministries called together persons interested in forming a Habitat affiliate.

At a meeting at First Presbyterian Church of Salisbury a steering committee was formed and, shortly thereafter, a 30-member interim Board of Directors was formed under the direction of Mrs. Peaches Rickard. This group began meeting regularly, raised funds, and initiated the formal affiliation process. By-laws were written and adopted. Articles of incorporation were approved by the State of North Carolina. In January 1990 a formal, rotating 15 member Board of Directors was elected and officers were chosen. Committees were formed and put into action.

In response to the Board Approved application submitted to Habitat International, Habitat for Humanity of Rowan County was officially granted affiliate status on July 2nd, 1990. The City of Salisbury donated two building lots to help construction get a start and ground was broken on Habitat’s first home on March 2nd, 1991.

Today Habitat continues a tradition of excellence built upon the firm foundation of Jesus Christ and those who seek to serve Him.
