In September I launched a program for this website that will allow you to donate to local charities. For the month of October I am working with none other than our own Rowan Helping Ministries. This month the campaign is Trick Or Treat So Others May Eat. Here is some information on the campaign from Erica Taylor Communications Director at RHM
"Trick Or Treat So Others May Eat is our annual food drive that we hold in October (around Halloween) to replenish and restock our food pantry. Typically, groups are assigned neighborhoods in Rowan County to distribute paper bags with a letter explaining the food drive, who the group dropping the bags off are, and when they are going to pick up the bags. Residents are encouraged to fill the paper bags with non-perishable, shelf stable food items. The same group that dropped off the bags will come back to collect them and return the full bags to Rowan Helping Ministries on Sunday, October 22 between 3-5PM. The highway patrol has graciously offered their services to help weigh car/trucks full of donations to aid in the recording of poundage. We realize that not everyone who wants to participate has the ability to distribute around neighborhoods so we are encouraging business/groups/organizations to interpret the food drive in a way that appeals to their audience. For instance, many churches do not have a youth group that is age appropriate for this event. Instead, they are holding the food drive within their congregation and turning it in to a men vs. women competition to see who can collect the most. So, we are thrilled that Rowan County Weather has chosen to designate their donations during the month of October to go towards our Trick Or Treat So Others May Eat event!
It is our largest food drive of the year and collects between 15,000-25,000 pounds of food. This past year, we collected 20,000 pounds during this event. You’re thinking, “Wow! 20,000 pounds. That’s amazing!” right? On average, we have anywhere from 50-75 individuals/families seeking food, clothing, and/or financial assistance. We typically give out over 1,400 pounds of food each DAY! So, our collection from Trick Or Treat So Others May Eat 2016 only provided enough food to distribute over the course of about 3.5 weeks. Our goal to this year is to increase participation by about 35% which means we would be including about 55 churches/organizations so that we can collect enough food last us well into the new year. We firmly believe that people should not have to choose between basic life necessities such as paying their rent vs. eating dinner. We have had such a blast putting on this event in the past and think it’s a great way to include people of all ages and backgrounds, but it definitely highlights the importance of teaching our youth to give back to the community"
