Severe Storms likely this afternoon and evening.

Wednesday, May 24, 2017 - 8:59am

We have had quite a bit of rain over the past few days but have managed to avoid severe weather. I feel we may be reaching the point that severe weather will come into play today. The Storm prediction Center is also of that same feeling as we are under a slight risk for severe weather today in the county and the area.

Let's walk through my feelings with the model data that is currently out there. We will see some isolated showers move through the county during the day but as we reach the afternoon hours around 3-4 pm things start to deteriorate and severe weather will move in.

As storms move through the area during the evening commute heavy downpours will certainly be likely and these storms could be strong to severe as CAPE levels will be elevated during the afternoon and evening hours. Any sunshine we get before the storms arrive will just increase the chances for severe storms.

We certainly can't rule out the risk of a tornado in and around the county this afternoon as the Significant Tornado Parameters are elevated just a bit for the afternoon hours. Strong Damaging winds could be likely as well.

Super cell chances are also pretty high for this afternoon and evening. These are the storms that get way up in the atmosphere and bring with them the increased chance for severe weather, hail, damaging winds, Heavy downpours and the chance for a tornado.

The accumulations around the county look to be pretty significant again today with some areas getting close to an inch and a half or more of rainfall. Most areas will see around an inch.

I will continue to monitor the model data and the radar throughout the day. I will post updates right here and on social media. Please stay weather aware today. As always thank you for following Rowan County Weather!
