Another Round of Afternoon Storms Could Produce Heavy Downpours Today

Another typical summer day is on tap across Rowan, Davie, and Davidson counties, with warm temperatures, plenty of humidity, and another round of scattered afternoon and evening thunderstorms expected.

While not everyone will see rain today, any storm that develops will be capable of producing brief heavy downpours, frequent lightning, and gusty winds. A few locations could pick up a quick inch or more of rain in a short period of time, leading to localized ponding of water on roads and in poor drainage areas.

Timing

Most of the morning should remain dry, although patchy fog may linger in some areas early. Thunderstorms are expected to begin developing during the early afternoon, generally after 1 PM, becoming most numerous through the late afternoon and early evening before gradually weakening after sunset.

Main Concerns

Today's storms will be typical summertime thunderstorms, but a few could become stronger and produce:

• Heavy downpours that may reduce visibility for motorists.
• Frequent cloud-to-ground lightning.
• Wind gusts of 30 to 40 mph.
• Localized flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas.

The overall severe weather threat remains low, but anyone with outdoor plans this afternoon should keep an eye on the sky and be prepared to move indoors if thunderstorms approach.

Looking Ahead

The unsettled weather pattern will continue through Thursday, with another chance for scattered afternoon and evening thunderstorms. Beginning Friday and continuing through the weekend, temperatures will gradually warm back into the upper 80s while storm coverage becomes more typical for August, with mainly isolated to scattered afternoon thunderstorms each day.
