From 84° Today to 96° by Friday: Rowan County's Quick Return to Summer Heat
After days of hot and humid weather, today is giving Rowan County residents a chance to catch their breath.
Afternoon temperatures will top out around 84 degrees, making today one of the coolest days we've experienced in quite some time. A northeast breeze, lingering cloud cover this morning, and a drier air mass are all combining to keep temperatures nearly 10 degrees below what is typical for mid-July.
If you've been planning to work outside, take a walk, or simply enjoy opening the windows this evening, today is the day to do it.
Unfortunately for those who prefer cooler weather, this break will be short-lived.
A Rapid Warm-Up Begins Wednesday
High pressure will quickly rebuild across the Southeast beginning Wednesday. With abundant sunshine returning, temperatures will rebound to around 91 degrees, bringing us right back to normal for this time of year.
The warming trend won't stop there.
By Thursday, highs are expected to reach 95 degrees, followed by 96 degrees on Friday as a strong upper-level ridge settles over the Carolinas. Afternoon sunshine combined with increasing humidity will make conditions feel even hotter, with heat index values approaching 100 degrees during the hottest part of the day.
Anyone spending extended time outdoors later this week should plan for frequent breaks, stay hydrated, and avoid strenuous activity during the peak afternoon heat whenever possible.
Rain Chances Stay Low... For Now
The same weather pattern responsible for the return of the heat will also keep rain chances very limited through the workweek. Most locations across Rowan County should remain dry Wednesday through Friday, with plenty of sunshine each day.
That changes as we head into the weekend.
A cold front approaching from the north will begin weakening the ridge, allowing scattered afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms to develop. At this point, Saturday carries around a 30% chance of storms, with additional opportunities likely later in the weekend and early next week.
While the rain won't be a washout, it will provide some relief from the intense heat.
The Bottom Line
Today's pleasant weather is a reminder that even in the middle of July, North Carolina can still deliver a comfortable summer day.
Enjoy the mid-80s while you can, because by the end of the workweek, Rowan County will once again be dealing with mid-90s temperatures, rising humidity, and another stretch of classic Carolina summer heat.
