Why This Weekend's Cooldown Will Feel So Different Across Rowan County
After several days of afternoon highs in the lower and middle 90s, Rowan County is finally getting a break from the summer heat. Beginning Sunday and especially Monday, temperatures will fall into the lower 80s, making it feel much more comfortable than we've experienced recently.
So what's causing such a dramatic change?
A Cold Front Brings More Than Just Rain
The first part of the weekend will still feel like summer. High temperatures will climb into the upper 80s Saturday, and scattered showers and thunderstorms will become more widespread as a cold front approaches from the north.
That front is expected to move through the area late Sunday into early Monday, bringing not only better rain chances but also opening the door for a much cooler air mass to settle over the Carolinas.
The "Wedge" Returns
Behind the cold front, high pressure will build over the northeastern United States. As that happens, cooler air will begin pushing southward east of the Appalachian Mountains, creating a weather pattern meteorologists call cold air damming, often referred to simply as "the wedge."
When a wedge develops, cooler air becomes trapped against the eastern slopes of the mountains. That keeps temperatures lower than normal, increases cloud cover, and can occasionally lead to periods of light rain or drizzle.
For Rowan County, this means a noticeable break from the July heat.
Just How Much Cooler?
Here's how temperatures are expected to change:
- Thursday: High near 93°
- Friday: High near 94°
- Saturday: High near 89°
- Sunday: High near 84°
- Monday: High near 81°
That's a drop of more than 10 degrees compared to the hottest days this week.
Even more noticeable will be the cooler mornings, with overnight lows falling into the lower 60s by Monday night. Many residents may even find themselves opening the windows for a change.
The Cooler Weather Won't Last Forever
If you're ready for fall, don't get too excited just yet.
Forecast models show the cooler pattern lasting through at least Tuesday before high pressure begins rebuilding across the eastern United States. That means temperatures are likely to climb back into the lower and middle 90s during the middle to latter part of next week.
Still, after several days of hot and humid weather, a few cooler days will certainly be a welcome change.
The Bottom Line
The upcoming cooldown is the result of a cold front moving through the Carolinas followed by a classic cold air damming pattern. Expect increasing showers and thunderstorms this weekend, then enjoy much more comfortable temperatures Sunday through Tuesday before summer heat gradually returns later next week.
If you've been waiting for a break from the heat, it's almost here.
