A prolonged stretch of dangerous heat remains locked in across Rowan County, with little relief expected through the Independence Day holiday weekend. Afternoon temperatures will reach around 100 to 101 degrees each day, while heat index values will climb as high as 105 to 107 degrees.

A Heat Advisory is in effect today from Noon until 8:00 PM as dangerous heat and humidity combine to create hazardous conditions for anyone spending time outdoors.

Today's Forecast

Thursday: Sunny and dangerously hot with a high near 100°. Heat index values could reach 107° this afternoon. Winds remain light and variable.

Tonight: Mostly clear with a warm low around 73°.

The intense heat continues through the holiday weekend with very little day-to-day change.

Friday: Sunny and hot with a high near 101°. Heat index values up to 105°.

Friday Night: Mostly clear with a low around 74°.

Independence Day (Saturday): Sunny and hot with a high near 101°. It will be another excellent day for fireworks and outdoor celebrations, but the afternoon heat will be dangerous. Sunday: Sunny and hot with a high near 101°.

Sunday Night: Partly cloudy with a low around 74°.

Early Next Week

The weather pattern begins to shift Monday as the upper-level ridge weakens. While it will remain hot, temperatures should slowly trend downward with a return to a more typical summertime pattern.

Monday: Mostly sunny and hot with a high near 98°. There is a 50% chance of afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 2 PM.

Monday Night: A 30% chance of showers and thunderstorms before 2 AM with a low around 72°.

Heat Safety

Several consecutive days of extreme heat can become dangerous, especially for children, older adults, outdoor workers, and pets.

  • Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
  • Limit strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the afternoon.
  • Take frequent breaks in air-conditioned buildings or shaded areas.
  • Never leave children or pets inside parked vehicles, even for a few minutes.

Storm Chances

Most of Rowan County should remain dry through the holiday weekend. While isolated thunderstorms are expected to develop across the mountains each afternoon, a stray storm cannot be completely ruled out today. If one develops locally, the atmosphere will be unstable enough to produce gusty damaging winds and hail, although the overall chance remains low.

Looking Ahead

The good news is that the prolonged heat wave finally begins easing early next week. Afternoon highs should settle back into the lower to middle 90s with more typical daily chances for afternoon and evening thunderstorms returning to the forecast.
