Renewed Heat Surge Expected This Weekend Across Rowan County

Wednesday, June 24, 2026 - 8:08am

After a brief break from the heat and humidity, summer is preparing to remind us once again that June isn't finished yet.

Temperatures across Rowan County will steadily climb through the remainder of the week, with some of the hottest weather since the recent heat wave returning by the weekend.

Comfortable Conditions Won't Last Long

Wednesday offers a refreshing break from the recent heat with sunshine, lower humidity, and highs in the mid-80s. However, that cooler and drier air mass is already beginning to move east, allowing warmer air to return to the Carolinas.

Temperatures will reach around 91 degrees Thursday before climbing into the mid-90s Friday and Saturday.

Current forecasts show highs reaching approximately 94 degrees Friday and 96 degrees Saturday across Rowan County.

Heat Index Values Could Exceed 100 Degrees

While actual air temperatures are expected to remain in the mid-90s, humidity levels will be increasing as southerly winds bring moisture back into the region.

That combination of heat and humidity could push heat index values to around 100 to 103 degrees during the afternoon hours Saturday and Sunday.

At this time, Heat Advisories are not in effect, but they may become necessary if temperatures trend slightly warmer or humidity levels remain elevated.

I'll continue monitoring forecast trends over the next several days.

Best Times for Outdoor Activities

If you're planning outdoor activities this weekend, the most comfortable hours will be:

Before 11 AM

After 7 PM

The most dangerous period for heat-related illnesses will likely occur between:

1 PM and 6 PM Friday, Saturday, and Sunday

During that time, frequent breaks in the shade and plenty of water will be important for anyone spending extended time outdoors.

Storm Chances Return Sunday

Most of Friday and Saturday should remain dry.

By Sunday afternoon, increasing moisture and a weak boundary approaching from the north will bring a 30 percent chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms to the area.

Not everyone will see rain, but any storms that develop could briefly lower temperatures and provide localized relief from the heat.

Looking Ahead

Forecast confidence decreases somewhat next week, but current guidance suggests temperatures may ease slightly Monday and Tuesday before another potentially stronger heat dome develops across portions of the eastern United States during the middle and latter part of next week.

For now, the focus remains on the weekend as Rowan County prepares for another round of summer heat with temperatures well into the 90s and heat index values exceeding 100 degrees.

As always, I'll continue monitoring forecast trends and provide updates if heat advisories become necessary.
