Flash Flood Warning Issued for Portions of Davidson County Until 9 PM

The National Weather Service in Raleigh has issued a Flash Flood Warning for portions of west-central Davidson County due to ongoing heavy rainfall and rapidly developing flooding concerns.
The warning remains in effect until 9:00 PM EDT.
Flash Flooding Underway
At 6:25 PM, Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rainfall across the warned area. Radar estimates indicate between 1.5 and 3.5 inches of rain has already fallen.
An additional up to 2 inches of rainfall may fall over the warning area this evening, increasing the threat of dangerous flash flooding.
According to the National Weather Service, flash flooding is either already occurring or expected to begin shortly.
Areas Included in the Warning
Locations impacted by the Flash Flood Warning include:
- Lexington
- Linwood
- High Rock Lake
- High Rock Lake Marina & Campground
- NC Wildlife Access Boat Launch
Residents and visitors in these areas should be prepared for rapidly changing conditions, especially near creeks, streams, low-lying roads, and poor drainage locations.
What Is Flash Flooding?
Flash flooding occurs when heavy rainfall causes water levels to rise rapidly, often with little warning.
Potential impacts include:
- Flooding of roads and highways
- Water covering streets and intersections
- Overflowing creeks and streams
- Flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas
- Dangerous conditions near underpasses and small waterways
Even locations that do not typically experience flooding can quickly become hazardous during periods of intense rainfall.
Travel Could Become Dangerous
Motorists are urged to use extreme caution across the warning area.
Floodwaters can be deeper and moving faster than they appear. Just a small amount of moving water can sweep a vehicle from the roadway.
The National Weather Service continues to emphasize:
Turn Around, Don't Drown.
Most flood-related fatalities occur in vehicles when drivers attempt to cross flooded roadways.
Additional Rainfall Expected
Thunderstorms remain active across Davidson County this evening, and additional rainfall could worsen flooding conditions in areas that have already received significant rainfall.
Anyone living, working, camping, or recreating near High Rock Lake, Lexington, or Linwood should closely monitor weather conditions and be prepared to move to higher ground if flooding develops.
Rowan County Weather will continue monitoring conditions and provide updates as additional information becomes available.
