A strong thunderstorm is moving through portions of southeastern Davidson County, northwestern Montgomery County, and southwestern Randolph County this evening, prompting a Special Weather Statement from the National Weather Service.

As of 5:37 PM, Doppler radar indicated a strong thunderstorm near Badin Lake. The storm was moving northwest at approximately 5 mph.

Hazards Associated With This Storm

The National Weather Service reports the storm is capable of producing:

  • Wind gusts up to 40 mph
  • Pea-sized hail
  • Frequent lightning
  • Heavy rainfall

Although this storm is currently below severe thunderstorm warning criteria, it is capable of producing locally hazardous weather conditions.

Areas Impacted

Communities and locations that may be affected include:

  • Badin Lake
  • Newsom
  • Eldorado
  • Morrow Mountain State Park
  • Pinehaven Marina
  • Fish Tales Marina
  • Whip-O-Will Campground

Anyone enjoying outdoor activities around Badin Lake or Morrow Mountain State Park should closely monitor weather conditions and be prepared to seek shelter quickly.

Wind and Hail Threat

Wind gusts approaching 40 mph may be strong enough to knock down small tree limbs and blow around unsecured outdoor items. Small hail is also possible and could cause minor damage to vegetation and other exposed outdoor objects.

Outdoor Recreation Concerns

With several campgrounds, marinas, and recreational areas within the storm's path, lightning may pose the greatest danger.

Remember that lightning can strike several miles away from the heaviest rainfall. If you hear thunder, move indoors immediately.

Stay Weather Aware

This storm is part of a broader pattern of scattered thunderstorms developing across the region this afternoon and evening.

Additional storms may continue to develop, and Rowan County Weather will continue monitoring radar trends and provide updates if additional statements or warnings are issued.

Anyone in the path of this storm should consider seeking shelter inside a sturdy building until the storm passes.
