Rowan County Drought Update: Can This Weekend's Rain Help?

Friday, May 29, 2026 - 9:28am

After months of drought conditions across Rowan County, many residents are looking toward this weekend's rain chances and wondering the same question: Will it help?

The short answer is yes — but probably not enough to make a significant dent in the drought.

Rain Chances Return

After a dry and pleasant Friday, scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop across portions of the area Saturday and again on Monday. However, neither day appears to bring widespread soaking rainfall.

Current forecasts show only isolated to scattered activity, meaning some neighborhoods could receive a beneficial downpour while others may see little to no rain at all.

That's been a familiar story throughout much of the spring.

Drought Conditions Remain Serious

Rowan County continues to deal with drought conditions that have developed over many months. While periodic showers help green up lawns and temporarily improve surface conditions, drought recovery requires repeated rainfall events over an extended period.

One inch of rain falling in an hour may help fill puddles and briefly boost stream levels, but it doesn't erase months of rainfall deficits.

The ground still needs consistent, widespread rainfall to replenish deeper soil moisture, ponds, streams, and groundwater supplies.

The Good News

Even modest rainfall can provide some short-term benefits:

  • Reduce wildfire danger
  • Help gardens and crops
  • Improve topsoil moisture
  • Lower pollen levels temporarily
  • Reduce stress on lawns and landscaping

Any rain is better than no rain, especially as we head toward the hotter summer months.

What Happens Next?

The forecast actually turns drier after Monday.

A cooler and less humid air mass is expected to settle across the Carolinas beginning Tuesday and continue through much of next week. While that will make for comfortable weather, it also means fewer opportunities for meaningful rainfall in the short term.

High temperatures are expected to remain below normal for early June, which may help slow evaporation rates and reduce stress on vegetation.

The Bottom Line

This weekend's showers may help some locations, but they are unlikely to provide the widespread soaking rainfall needed to significantly improve drought conditions across Rowan County.

As always, it only takes one well-placed thunderstorm to produce meaningful rainfall for your backyard. That's why rainfall totals can vary dramatically from one side of the county to the other.

If you receive rain this weekend, be sure to share your rainfall totals with Rowan County Weather. Those reports help paint a better picture of how much rain actually falls across the county.

What Do You Think?

How much rain have you received at your location over the past month? Has your lawn recovered at all, or are drought conditions still obvious where you live?
