Drought Monitor Update

Thursday, May 7, 2026 - 10:02am

This week’s U.S. Drought Monitor continues to show widespread drought conditions across central North Carolina, including Rowan, Davie, and Davidson Counties.

Much of the region remains in Severe Drought (D2), while areas farther east continue to deal with Extreme Drought (D3) conditions. Despite recent rainfall events, long-term deficits continue to impact soil moisture, stream levels, and vegetation across the area.

The good news is additional rainfall is expected today, with more rain chances returning late Sunday into Monday. While this won’t erase the drought overnight, repeated rainfall events over the coming weeks will help improve conditions heading deeper into May.

Recent rainfall has helped lower the wildfire threat somewhat compared to earlier this spring, but dry conditions remain a concern across the region.
