An Increased Fire Danger is in effect across much of central North Carolina this afternoon, including Rowan County.
From noon through 8 PM, conditions will be favorable for fires to start easily and spread quickly.
What’s Driving the Fire Danger
A combination of weather and ground conditions is creating a higher risk today:
- Low humidity: Dropping to around 25–30%
- Gusty winds: Frequent gusts between 20–30 mph
- Dry fuels: Leaves, grass, and brush remain dry
This combination makes it much easier for fires to ignite — and once they start, they can spread rapidly.
Why This Matters
Even something small can quickly turn into a dangerous situation under these conditions.
- Dry grasses and leaves can ignite easily
- Wind can push flames quickly across open areas
- Fires can spread faster than expected
This is especially important during the afternoon and early evening hours when conditions are at their peak.
Burn Ban Still in Effect
A state burn ban remains in place, including here in Rowan County, as well as surrounding counties such as:
- Davidson
- Davie
- Cabarrus
- Iredell
- Mecklenburg
- Stanly
- Union
Open burning of any kind is illegal in these areas.
Safety Reminders
If you’re spending time outdoors today:
- Properly dispose of cigarettes and matches
- Avoid parking on dry grass or leaves
- Use caution with equipment that could create sparks
- Do not burn outdoors while the burn ban is in place
Bottom Line
- Increased fire danger from noon to 8 PM today
- Low humidity + gusty winds + dry fuels = high risk for fast-spreading fires
- Burn ban remains in effect, including Rowan County
Even with some spring green-up, conditions today still support fire growth — so use extra caution.
