Midweek Rain Update: Models Trending Wetter — Here’s What Changed

Tuesday, May 5, 2026 - 7:30am

After a few quiet and warm days across Rowan County and surrounding areas, attention is now turning to a midweek system that continues to show increasing potential for beneficial rainfall.

The latest round of model data — including the newly added NAM — is giving us a clearer picture of what to expect.

What’s Changed Over the Past Few Days

Earlier model runs (late last week into the weekend) showed a more scattered, lighter rain setup with limited coverage and totals generally under an inch.

Now, with several consecutive model runs, we’re seeing a more organized and wetter trend develop:

  • A stronger, slower-moving cold front
  • Better moisture return from the Gulf
  • Increased confidence in widespread rain coverage

This is a noticeable shift — and an important one given the ongoing drought across North Carolina, where much of the state has been dealing with severe to extreme conditions.

Latest Model Breakdown

Blend of Models (Top Image)

  • Shows a widespread 1.0” to 1.5” rainfall zone across much of the Piedmont
  • Rowan County sits right in that corridor
  • A good signal for steady, soaking rain

NAM (New Addition)

  • The most aggressive solution right now
  • Indicates 2.0”+ totals nearby, especially just north and west of the area
  • Suggests potential for heavier bands of rain and localized higher totals

GFS

  • Still shows a solid rain event, but more variable
  • Keeps totals closer to 1.0”–1.5”, with some localized higher pockets
  • Slightly less aggressive than the NAM, but still supportive of a wet pattern

What This Means for Rowan County

Confidence is increasing that we’ll see:

  • Rain developing Wednesday
  • Heavier showers and storms Wednesday night into Thursday
  • A widespread soaking rain event

At this point, a general range of:
0.75” to 1.5” looks likely
With locally higher amounts possible if heavier bands set up

Storm Potential

Along with the rain, there is still:

  • A low-end severe weather risk
  • Potential for gusty winds and small hail
  • Localized heavy downpours Wednesday evening into Thursday

This lines up with the idea of a strengthening system moving through midweek.

The Big Picture

This is exactly the kind of system we’ve been waiting for.

  • The rainfall looks widespread, not spotty
  • Totals are trending higher with each model cycle
  • It should provide meaningful drought relief

And once this system moves out…

Looking Ahead

  • Friday: Cooler and drier
  • Weekend: Mostly sunny and comfortable
  • Next Week: Another system could bring additional rain chances

Bottom Line

  • Rain chances are increasing — and so are rainfall totals
  • Best window for rain: Wednesday night through Thursday
  • Models are trending wetter, with some now showing 1–2+ inches nearby

This is shaping up to be a much-needed soaking rain for the area.
