Rowan County Drought Monitor Update

Thursday, March 19, 2026 - 9:26am

Drought conditions continue across Rowan County, with some areas now reaching more serious levels.

Current Status:

  • Extreme Drought (Red): Portions of Rowan County

  • Severe Drought: Remainder of the county

Across North Carolina

Drought conditions remain widespread across North Carolina, with only isolated improvements this week.

  • Some areas saw minor improvement where light rain fell

  • Most locations, including Rowan County, saw little to no change

  • Ongoing precipitation deficits and dry soil continue to drive drought conditions

What This Means for Rowan County

  • Soil moisture remains very low

  • Streams and creeks are still running below normal levels

  • Vegetation stress continues despite recent warmer weather

  • It will take multiple soaking rains to see meaningful improvement

Looking Ahead

A few shower chances return early next week, but widespread, beneficial rainfall is still lacking.

Drought conditions are expected to persist for now.

Steve’s Notes

Even with everything starting to green up, Rowan County is still dealing with significant drought conditions. This warm stretch ahead will only increase evaporation, so we’ll need more than just a quick round of showers to turn things around.
