Tulip Season + Spring Weather: Why This Weekend Is Perfect for Patterson Farm

Thursday, March 19, 2026 - 8:00am

If you’ve been waiting for the perfect time to get outside and enjoy spring in Rowan County — this is it.

A big warm-up is on the way, and it lines up just about perfectly with one of the most colorful events of the season: tulip picking at Patterson Farm.

A Picture-Perfect Spring Weekend

After a stretch of cooler weather, temperatures are set to climb quickly:

  • Friday: Low 70s with sunshine

  • Saturday: Upper 70s with a mix of sun and clouds

  • Sunday: Low 80s and sunny

That’s about 15–20 degrees above normal for mid-March — and it’s going to feel more like late April than early spring.

Even better? Dry weather is expected all weekend, making it ideal for outdoor plans.

Why This Weather Matters for Tulips

Tulips thrive in cool nights and warming daytime temperatures — exactly what we’re seeing right now.

  • Cool mornings help preserve the blooms

  • Warm afternoons bring out the vibrant colors

  • Dry conditions mean better field access and more comfortable picking

This combination creates prime viewing and picking conditions, especially during the late morning and afternoon hours.

First Year, Big Buzz

This is the first year Patterson Farm has offered tulip picking, and it’s already generating a lot of excitement across the community.

If you saw the opening day video earlier this week, you know just how impressive the fields look right now — and with warmer weather arriving, the blooms should continue to pop.

Best Times to Go

If you’re planning a visit this weekend, here are a few tips:

  • Go mid-morning to early afternoon for the best lighting and temperatures

  • Bring a light jacket early — mornings will still start in the 40s and 50s

  • Plan for crowds, especially on Sunday with near 80° weather

Looking Ahead

While the weekend looks fantastic, changes are on the way.

A cold front arriving Monday could bring a few showers and cooler temperatures heading into early next week — so this weekend may be your best window to catch the tulips at their peak.
