The watch is in effect from 4:40 AM until 11:00 AM EDT Monday and includes Rowan, Davie, and Davidson Counties.
Forecasters say a fast-moving line of showers and thunderstorms will track eastward across the region during the early morning hours.
Primary Threats
The main concerns with this line of storms include:
• Damaging wind gusts up to 70 mph
• Isolated hail up to 1 inch in diameter
• A brief tornado or two possible
While tornado potential is low, forecasters say it cannot be completely ruled out within the stronger storms embedded in the line.
What to Expect Locally
For communities across Rowan, Davie, and Davidson Counties, the most likely impacts will be:
-
Brief periods of heavy rain
-
Strong wind gusts capable of downing small tree limbs
-
Rapidly moving storms that could move through quickly
Because the storms are moving quickly, conditions may change rapidly if stronger cells develop along the line.
What a Severe Thunderstorm Watch Means
A Severe Thunderstorm Watch means conditions are favorable for severe storms to develop in and near the watch area.
It does not mean severe weather is currently occurring everywhere, but it signals that the atmosphere is capable of producing severe storms.
Residents should:
-
Stay weather aware during the morning hours
-
Monitor alerts and warnings
-
Be prepared to move indoors quickly if storms approach
Severe thunderstorms can sometimes produce brief tornadoes, especially within fast-moving lines of storms.
Rowan County Weather Will Monitor Conditions
Rowan County Weather will continue monitoring radar and National Weather Service updates throughout the morning and will post additional alerts if warnings are issued or storms intensify across the area.
