From 73° to 45°: Why Temperatures Are About to Drop 25 Degrees

Saturday, February 28, 2026 - 12:52pm

Right now, it’s overcast and sitting near 49° across Rowan County. It doesn’t exactly feel like spring just yet.

But by Sunday afternoon, we’ll be talking about highs near 73°.

And then by Monday, temperatures will struggle to reach the mid-40s.

That’s a nearly 25-degree swing in less than 24 hours.

So what’s going on?

Today: Gradual Improvement

Clouds will hang around through mid-morning before gradual clearing develops late morning into early afternoon. Once we get some sunshine mixing down, temperatures should climb into the mid to upper 60s.

It won’t be a perfect blue-sky day, but conditions will steadily improve.

Sunday: Spring Preview

Sunday is the warmest day of the stretch. Mostly sunny skies and light winds will push highs into the lower 70s.

It will feel much more like early April than late winter.

But that warmth won’t last.

Monday: Enter Cold Air Damming

Behind a cold front Sunday night, a strong high pressure system will settle over the Great Lakes and Northeast. This setup allows cooler air to wedge southward along the eastern side of the Appalachians — a pattern known as Cold Air Damming (CAD).

When CAD develops, several things happen:

  • Temperatures drop sharply

  • Clouds become stubborn and persistent

  • Northeast winds increase

  • The air feels damp and raw

Instead of sunshine helping temperatures recover Monday, we’ll be stuck under thick cloud cover with cool northeast flow.

Highs Monday will only reach around 45°, and that may occur earlier in the day before steady or slowly falling temperatures during the afternoon.

Why It Will Feel Even Colder

Even though 45° doesn’t sound extreme, it will feel noticeably colder because:

  • Skies will remain cloudy

  • Winds will shift out of the northeast around 10 mph

  • The air mass will be moist and stable

After a 73° Sunday, that contrast will be dramatic.

What About Wintry Weather?

The better chances for freezing rain or a wintry mix remain north of Rowan County, mainly toward the northern mountains and closer to the Virginia border.

Locally, this looks like a cold rain setup with minimal impact. Temperatures Monday night will dip near freezing, so I’ll continue monitoring trends closely.

The Good News

Cold Air Damming setups this time of year usually don’t last long.

By Wednesday, temperatures rebound sharply — climbing back into the upper 60s with a return to a much milder pattern.

In short:

Cloudy and cool now.
Spring preview Sunday.
Late-winter feel Monday.
Warmer again by midweek.

Stay tuned for updates as we refine the details.
