Spring Tease, Winter Reminder: Why Rowan County Is About to Drop 30 Degrees

Friday, February 20, 2026 - 7:49am

Near 80° today… 20s by Monday morning. Here’s what’s happening.

If you stepped outside this afternoon, it probably felt more like April than February.

Highs are climbing into the upper 70s — flirting with record territory — but don’t get too comfortable. A sharp pattern change is about to send temperatures tumbling nearly 30 degrees in just a few days.

Here’s why.

Why It’s So Warm Today

We’re currently sitting in a warm sector ahead of a cold front. Southerly winds are pulling in mild air, and despite some morning showers, temperatures are climbing quickly.

Once clouds thin this afternoon, we maximize daytime heating — allowing highs to approach the upper 70s.

This kind of February warmth isn’t unheard of, but it doesn’t last long this time of year.

What Changes This Weekend

A stronger cold front moves through late Saturday into Sunday.

Behind it:

  • Winds turn northwest

  • Cooler air rushes in

  • Clouds increase

  • Rain chances return

Sunday’s high will struggle into the lower 50s — already 20+ degrees cooler than today.

Then the real chill arrives Sunday night.

The Big Temperature Drop

By early Monday morning, lows are expected to dip into the upper 20s.

Monday afternoon highs may only reach the lower 40s — nearly 35 degrees cooler than today’s peak.

That puts us well below average for this time of year.

What This Means for You

• Early budding plants could feel the stress
• Outdoor pets will need warmer shelter Sunday night
• Exposed pipes should be monitored
• It will feel much colder with the wind Sunday into Monday

While this isn’t an extreme Arctic outbreak, it is a sharp reminder that winter still has a grip on the calendar.

How Long Does the Cold Last?

Below-normal temperatures likely stick around through Tuesday, with gradual moderation midweek.

Long-range guidance suggests we rebound closer to average by Wednesday or Thursday.

This is classic late-February weather in the Carolinas — brief spring previews followed by winter reminders.

Enjoy the warmth today. The heavier jackets will be back out by Monday morning.
