A Sunny Start to 2026 — How Long Does the Mild Weather Last?

Thursday, January 1, 2026 - 9:10am

ROWAN, DAVIE & DAVIDSON COUNTIES, NC — The new year is getting off to a bright and comfortable start across the central Piedmont. Sunshine and mild temperatures are in place for New Year’s Day, offering a pleasant change from the colder conditions that often arrive right after Christmas.

New Year’s Day: Bright Skies Across the Area

High pressure is firmly in control today, bringing sunny skies to Rowan, Davie, and Davidson counties. Afternoon highs are climbing into the mid-50s, running several degrees above normal for early January. A light west breeze at times adds a crisp feel, but overall conditions are ideal for getting outside.

Tonight remains quiet area-wide with mostly clear skies. Lows fall into the upper 20s to near 30°, cold enough for patchy frost but nothing unusual for this time of year.

Friday: Clouds Increase, Mild Air Holds

Friday continues the mild pattern across all three counties. Clouds increase through the day, but temperatures still reach the upper 50s, staying above seasonal averages. Winds remain light, making Friday another decent day for travel and outdoor plans before the weather turns more unsettled.

When the Pattern Changes

The break in dry weather ends late Friday night. A low-pressure system approaching from the south brings rain into Rowan, Davie, and Davidson counties late Friday night and through Saturday.

Saturday is expected to be wet and gray, with widespread rain across the region. While rainfall amounts will vary, this system brings beneficial rainfall, and no wintry weather is expected. Temperatures cool back closer to normal, with highs mainly in the mid to upper 40s.

Sunday & Early Next Week: Dry Weather Returns

Once the weekend system moves out, sunshine returns Sunday across all three counties. Daytime highs rebound into the low 50s, with cooler nights. Dry conditions continue into early next week as high pressure builds back in.

Bottom Line

  • Today & Friday: Sunny to partly cloudy, mild, and quiet

  • Late Friday night–Saturday: Rain returns across the region

  • Sunday into next week: Dry, sunny, and seasonable

It’s a classic early-January setup for the Piedmont — a mild start, a rainmaker to end the week, then a quieter and drier pattern settling in for the days ahead.
