The National Weather Service has issued an Increased Fire Danger Statement for parts of western and central North Carolina — including Rowan County — effective from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday.
Why This Matters
Abnormally dry conditions continue across much of the region. As a result, relative humidity values will drop into the 30–35 percent range during the afternoon hours. Combined with gusty west to southwest winds of 20 to 30 mph, these factors will create an elevated risk for the rapid spread of any outdoor fires.
What You Should Know
Even though no burn ban is currently in effect, residents are strongly advised to avoid outdoor burning during this time.
If burning is necessary, use extreme caution — fires can quickly get out of control under these weather conditions.
Safety Recommendations
-
Check with local burn permitting authorities before lighting any fire.
-
Avoid burning leaves, brush piles, or debris until conditions improve.
-
Never leave a fire unattended, and ensure all embers are completely extinguished before leaving the area.
-
Dispose of smoking materials properly and avoid parking vehicles on dry grass.
Outlook
Winds will ease after sunset Wednesday evening, but dry air will remain in place through Thursday. Conditions are expected to improve later in the week as humidity levels gradually recover.
