Mosquito Forecast: Cooler Weather Finally Brings Relief

Tuesday, October 28, 2025 - 8:32am

After a few days of rain and cooler air settling over Rowan County, mosquito activity is starting to drop off noticeably.

Fading Activity

With highs staying in the 50s and 60s and overnight lows dipping into the 30s and 40s, mosquito activity will continue to decrease through the end of the week. The combination of cooler air, shorter daylight hours, and drier conditions heading into the weekend will greatly reduce the number of mosquitoes active around sunrise and sunset.

Why They’re Slowing Down

Mosquitoes thrive when soil and air temperatures remain above 50°F. Once temperatures consistently fall below that threshold, their life cycle slows, and surviving adults become sluggish or die off entirely. Standing water from recent rainfall can still support larvae for a few days, but those populations will also decline quickly as temperatures stay cool.

Weekend Outlook

Expect noticeably fewer mosquitoes by Friday and through the weekend. Areas near wooded spots, creeks, or low-lying yards that held water earlier this week may still see a few active mosquitoes during the warmest part of the afternoon, but overall, the trend will be downward.

Looking Ahead

Unless an extended warm spell develops in November, mosquito season is winding down for Rowan County. This is likely one of the final weeks of measurable activity until next spring.
