Latest from the National Hurricane Center on Melissa (Atlantic)

Wednesday, October 22, 2025 - 6:09am

Data from a Hurricane Hunter aircraft indicates the center of Melissa has re-formed farther northeast, with maximum sustained winds near 45 mph (45 kt) and a central pressure of 1000 mb.

Melissa is moving slowly northwest at around 6 mph, but there remains significant uncertainty in both its track and intensity over the coming days. Some forecast models bring the storm toward Haiti or Cuba, while others shift it westward to the south of Jamaica.

Environmental conditions are expected to allow slow strengthening during the next few days. If Melissa moves farther southwest, conditions could favor additional intensification, potentially increasing the chance of the storm becoming a major hurricane later in the forecast period.

Key Messages from the NHC:

  1. Heavy rainfall is expected across portions of the Dominican Republic, Haiti, and Jamaica through the weekend, bringing the risk of flash flooding and landslides.

  2. A Hurricane Watch is in effect for southwestern Haiti, and a Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for Jamaica. Preparations to protect life and property should be completed by Thursday.

  3. There is large uncertainty in the future track and strength of Melissa. Interests elsewhere in Hispaniola and Cuba should continue to monitor official forecasts.
