What’s Behind the Fire Danger
Behind a departing cold front, dry and windy conditions will settle back into the area. Afternoon relative humidity values will drop into the 25–30% range, and wind gusts could reach 15–20 mph at times. These factors, combined with the recent stretch of dry weather, will raise the risk of outdoor fires spreading quickly.
What This Means for Rowan County
Even though temperatures will remain cool, the lack of moisture in the air and in the ground will make it easier for fires to ignite and spread. Outdoor burning — including leaf piles, brush, or other debris — is strongly discouraged under these conditions.
Officials urge residents to check with local burn permitting authorities before conducting any outdoor burning. If burning is allowed, extreme caution is advised.
Safety Tips
-
Avoid outdoor burning until conditions improve.
-
Never leave a fire unattended, even small yard debris burns.
-
Keep a water source or hose nearby if burning is necessary.
-
Dispose of cigarette butts properly — do not toss them from vehicles.
-
Be mindful of equipment sparks or trailer chains that could ignite dry grass along roadsides.
Looking Ahead
Conditions are expected to remain dry through at least Thursday before a gradual return of moisture by the weekend. While rain chances may increase late in the week, fire danger will stay elevated until more significant rainfall arrives.
