When Fall Really Feels Like Fall: Why Rowan County’s Cool Downs Don’t Always Stick

Friday, October 10, 2025 - 8:02am

If you’ve lived in Rowan County for a while, you know the feeling — one morning you’re reaching for a jacket and sipping a hot coffee on the porch, and just a few days later, it’s warm enough to roll the windows down again. Our weather loves to tease us this time of year, with brief cool spells followed by a quick rebound into the 70s and even low 80s.

So why does it happen?

High Pressure and the “See-Saw” Pattern

During October, the Southeast sits between two competing forces: cold, dry air spilling south from Canada and lingering warmth from high pressure systems over the Gulf and Atlantic. Each time one of these systems takes control, it changes our local weather dramatically.

When strong Canadian high pressure slides in, it brings those crisp mornings and afternoons that finally feel like fall. But once that high drifts east, winds turn back around from the south, pulling in milder air and quickly erasing the chill. That’s why our cool-downs often last just two or three days before temperatures climb again.

Coastal Systems and Cloud Cover

Another reason our fall weather feels inconsistent is the nearby Atlantic. Coastal lows — like the one developing this weekend — can send clouds and breezy northeast winds our way even when it’s dry here. Those clouds can keep daytime highs in check for a day or two, but as soon as the system pulls away, sunshine and southerly winds help us warm right back up.

A Typical North Carolina Transition

This back-and-forth is normal for October in North Carolina. Historically, Salisbury’s average high starts near 77° at the beginning of the month and falls to around 69° by Halloween. We’ll still have warm days ahead, but each front that passes makes the next cool spell a little stronger and a little longer.

In other words — fall is arriving, just on its own North Carolina schedule.
