Today marks one year since the remnants of Hurricane Helene swept across North Carolina, leaving behind a footprint that will not soon be forgotten. While Rowan County experienced its share of flooding rains, downed trees, and scattered power outages, it was western North Carolina that bore the heaviest burden.
Impacts Close to Home
Locally, Rowan County saw several inches of rain in a short period, leading to flash flooding in low-lying areas and travel disruptions across the county. Creeks rose quickly, and numerous neighborhoods dealt with waterlogged yards and debris from fallen limbs. While the damage here was significant, it was manageable compared to what unfolded just hours west.
Western North Carolina’s Struggle
Communities in the mountains faced devastating floods, landslides, and widespread infrastructure loss. Roads and bridges were washed out, entire neighborhoods were cut off, and recovery stretched on for months. Helene will be remembered in those counties as one of the most destructive weather events in recent memory.
Coming Together in the Aftermath
In the days following Helene, the true story became one of resilience and compassion. Volunteers from across the state — including many from right here in Rowan County — made their way west to provide food, shelter, and supplies. Churches and civic groups organized drives to collect essentials, while emergency crews worked tirelessly to restore basic services.
Neighbors helped neighbors, and strangers quickly became friends. The storm underscored how deeply connected our communities are, reminding us that when disaster strikes one part of North Carolina, we all feel it.
Steve Monday reflects:
“Helene showed us that while weather can bring destruction, it can also bring out the very best in people. The way folks came together to support one another will be remembered long after the floodwaters receded.”
Looking Ahead
The anniversary of Helene is both a reminder of our vulnerability and a testament to our resilience. As another hurricane season unfolds, Rowan County Weather encourages everyone to stay prepared, stay aware, and never underestimate the strength of a community united in the face of challenge.
