Nearly 3,000 lives were lost in the attacks in New York City, Washington D.C., and Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Countless more were impacted in the years that followed, including first responders, military service members, and families who carry the weight of that day with them still.
Here in Rowan County, many of us remember exactly where we were when the news broke. Schools paused to watch live coverage, workplaces fell silent, and communities gathered to pray and grieve together. Though thousands of miles away, the events of that morning connected us all in shock, sorrow, and—ultimately—unity.
Honoring the Heroes
We pause today to remember the first responders who ran toward danger, many giving their lives in the process. We also honor the men and women in uniform who answered the call in the months and years that followed, protecting our nation at home and abroad.
That day also showed the courage of four-legged heroes. More than 300 search and rescue dogs were deployed to Ground Zero and the Pentagon to help find survivors in the rubble. Their dedication, alongside their human handlers, brought hope in the darkest hours and provided comfort to rescue crews working around the clock.
A Time for Reflection
September 11th reminds us how fragile life can be, but also how strong we can be together. It’s a day to reflect on resilience, compassion, and unity—and to ensure future generations know the story, not just as history, but as a reminder of what it means to stand together.
As we go about our daily routines here in Rowan County, let us take a moment of silence to remember the lives lost, the families forever changed, the bravery of first responders, and the loyal dogs who worked tirelessly in the aftermath.
We will never forget.
