September Weather Preview: What to Expect in Rowan County

Sunday, August 31, 2025 - 7:53am

As August comes to a close, Rowan County residents will notice a shift in the weather. September is traditionally a transition month, where late-summer warmth begins giving way to early signs of fall.

On average, high temperatures early in September run in the mid-80s, with lows in the mid-60s. By the end of the month, normal highs drop into the upper 70s, while overnight lows dip into the mid-50s. This year, however, September is starting cooler than usual. The current forecast shows highs mainly in the upper 70s to low 80s for the first week, with clear skies and comfortable humidity.

This cooler-than-normal start is linked to high pressure along the East Coast and a trough pattern over the eastern United States. These features will help keep conditions dry and pleasant for the first half of the week. By late week, a cold front approaching from the west may bring a few showers, especially in the mountains, though rainfall locally looks limited for now.

September is also an important month for tropical weather. The peak of the Atlantic hurricane season typically comes around September 10, and the National Hurricane Center is already tracking a tropical wave off the coast of Africa. While this system is not a concern right now, it is a reminder that the tropics remain active this time of year.

Looking ahead, residents can expect September to bring more mornings with a hint of fall, gradually shorter days, and the potential for stronger cold fronts to move through by the end of the month. Rowan County Weather will continue to provide updates on both local conditions and any tropical developments that could affect the region.
