Fall Color Forecast 2025: When and Where to See the Best Leaves in Rowan County and Beyond

Friday, August 22, 2025 - 10:19am

As August winds down, attention begins shifting to one of the most anticipated times of year in North Carolina — the fall color season. While we’re still a few weeks away from the first noticeable changes, it’s not too early to look at when leaves typically turn in Rowan County, nearby areas, and the Blue Ridge Mountains, along with some of the best local and regional spots to enjoy the view.

When Leaves Typically Change

  • Rowan County & Piedmont: The first hints of color usually appear in early to mid-October, with peak color often arriving late October into early November. Oaks, maples, and sweetgums provide much of the color here.

  • Foothills: Just west of us in the foothill counties, leaves often reach their best color by mid-to-late October, about a week earlier than the Piedmont.

  • NC Mountains: Higher elevations lead the way. Above 5,000 feet, color begins late September to early October. The best viewing along the Blue Ridge Parkway and surrounding peaks usually falls between early and mid-October, working downslope into the valleys as the month progresses.

Peak Color Potential This Year

Based on historical averages, Rowan County can expect its brightest color around Halloween into the first week of November. Weather conditions between now and then will play a role:

  • Cooler nights and sunny days typically enhance vibrant reds and oranges.

  • Excess rain or early frosts can dull or shorten the season.

As of now, long-range outlooks suggest a favorable setup for a fairly colorful season, especially if September and October bring those crisp, clear conditions that help leaves shine.

Where to See the Best Fall Color

In Rowan County:

  • Dan Nicholas Park – A popular local spot to catch maples and oaks in full display around the lake and trails.

  • Salisbury Greenway – Easy access to walking paths lined with hardwoods showing off their autumn shades.

  • High Rock Lake – Reflections of changing leaves make for especially scenic views near the shoreline.

Day Trips to the NC Mountains:

  • Blue Ridge Parkway – The classic drive, with overlooks like Craggy Gardens, Linville Falls, and Rough Ridge offering sweeping views of the mountains in color.

  • Grandfather Mountain – A mix of elevations means you can see multiple stages of color in one trip.

  • Boone & Blowing Rock – Convenient towns with access to trails, overlooks, and mountain vistas.

Looking Ahead

The next six to eight weeks will bring a gradual transformation from the greens of late summer to the fiery reds, oranges, and golds of autumn. Here in Rowan County, expect the first scattered signs by mid-October, with the best color likely around the end of the month into early November.

Fall color season in North Carolina is long and varied, thanks to the state’s range of elevations. Whether you stick close to home or take a drive to the Blue Ridge Parkway, this year promises to deliver the kind of seasonal beauty that makes autumn a favorite time for so many.
