Heatwave Grips Rowan County: What You Need to Know About the Back-to-Back Advisories

The National Weather Service has issued back-to-back Heat Advisories for Rowan County and surrounding areas as dangerous heat and humidity continue to affect the region. Monday and Tuesday are expected to bring some of the most oppressive conditions so far this summer.

What’s in Effect

• Monday: A Heat Advisory remains in effect from noon to 8 PM, with heat index values expected to reach up to 107 degrees.

• Tuesday: A second Heat Advisory is already in place from 11 AM to 8 PM, with heat index values potentially reaching 108 degrees.

• A previous overnight advisory officially expired at 2 AM Monday morning.

Heat index values over 105 degrees can pose serious health risks, particularly for outdoor workers, children, older adults, and those without access to air conditioning.

Why This Heat is Dangerous

Extreme heat is one of the leading causes of weather-related deaths in the United States. When the body cannot cool itself effectively, it increases the risk of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, which can escalate quickly in these conditions.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recommends taking frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas and increasing hydration throughout the day. If someone is showing signs of confusion, dizziness, or stops sweating, call 911 immediately.

Precautions to Take Today and Tuesday

• Limit strenuous outdoor activities between noon and 6 PM

• Drink plenty of water — even if you do not feel thirsty

• Avoid alcohol or caffeinated drinks, which can speed up dehydration

• Wear lightweight and light-colored clothing

• Check on elderly relatives or neighbors

• Never leave children or pets in vehicles, even for a short time

When Will It End?

Relief is on the way, but not immediately. While scattered afternoon thunderstorms may bring brief local cooling, the heat and humidity will persist through at least Thursday. A cold front arriving late in the week could drop temperatures and increase cloud cover and rain chances.
