The National Weather Service has issued consecutive Heat Advisories for Rowan County and surrounding areas as a dangerous combination of heat and humidity grips the region.

Advisory Details:

  • Today (Monday): A Heat Advisory remains in effect from noon to 8 PM, with heat index values reaching up to 107 degrees.

  • Tuesday: A second Heat Advisory will be in effect from 11 AM to 8 PM, with heat index values as high as 108 degrees expected.

  • An earlier advisory that extended into the overnight hours expired at 2 AM Monday.

These values push well into the danger zone for heat-related illnesses, especially for anyone working or spending extended time outdoors.

What This Means for You:

Heat index values above 105 degrees can lead to:

  • Heat exhaustion or heat stroke with prolonged exposure

  • Elevated risk for children, older adults, outdoor workers, and pets

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) urges frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments for outdoor workers. Heat stroke is a medical emergency — call 911 immediately if someone is showing signs of confusion, lack of sweating, or loss of consciousness.

Safety Tips:

  • Hydrate frequently — do not wait until you are thirsty

  • Avoid outdoor activity during peak heat hours (noon to 6 PM)

  • Never leave children or pets in vehicles, even for a few minutes

  • Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing

  • Check on elderly neighbors and those without air conditioning

What’s Ahead:

While scattered thunderstorms may bring brief relief in the late afternoon hours both today and Tuesday, the heat and humidity will dominate the forecast until a cold front brings much-needed relief later in the week.

Stay weather-aware and heat-smart as we navigate through this oppressive stretch. Rowan County Weather will continue monitoring conditions and provide updates throughout the week.
