After several days of oppressive heat and humidity, a change is on the way. A strong cold front is expected to move through Rowan County late this week, bringing with it much-needed relief from dangerous heat index values that have hovered between 105 and 109 degrees for days.
Timing the Change
The cold front is projected to arrive on Friday, according to the latest forecast guidance from the National Weather Service and NOAA model data. Leading up to that point, heat advisories remain in effect, with daily highs in the upper 90s and overnight lows struggling to dip below the mid-70s.
Showers and thunderstorms are expected to become more widespread Thursday and Friday as the front approaches. These storms could help knock down temperatures and provide temporary relief ahead of the more significant air mass change.
What to Expect After the Front
Once the front passes through Friday night, a noticeably cooler and drier air mass will begin to settle over the Carolinas. By Saturday, high temperatures in Rowan County may only reach the lower 80s, a sharp drop from recent afternoons near or above 100 degrees. Some foothill and I-40 corridor locations could stay in the upper 70s.
Overnight lows will also fall back into the 60s, giving residents a break from the stifling, tropical-like nights the region has endured for over a week.
Why This Front Matters
This is not just a routine cold front. It marks a shift in the broader weather pattern, driven by a strong upper-level trough over the eastern United States and a breakdown of the dominant subtropical ridge that has been parked over the Southeast.
Aside from the drop in temperatures, this front will also help return Rowan County’s storm pattern to more typical afternoon and evening thunderstorms, as opposed to the spotty and suppressed activity seen recently.
Stay Weather Aware
Until the front arrives, heat will remain the top concern. Additional heat advisories are in effect through Monday evening, and similar alerts may be issued Tuesday and Wednesday. Monitor for updates on any storm threats tied to the front later in the week.
Rowan County Weather will continue to provide daily forecasts, radar tracking, and severe weather alerts as conditions evolve.
