Strong Thunderstorm Impacts Southeastern Iredell and West-Central Rowan Counties

Mooresville, NC — July 16, 2025 (5:49 PM):
The National Weather Service has issued a Special Weather Statement as a strong thunderstorm moves northeast through southeastern Iredell County and into west-central Rowan County, including parts of the Lake Norman region and communities near Cleveland and Mount Ulla.

Storm Details:

At 5:49 PM, Doppler radar indicated a strong storm 11 miles south of Statesville, near Mooresville, tracking northeast at 20 mph. This storm is capable of producing:

  • Wind gusts up to 40 mph

  • Hail up to half an inch in diameter

Areas Affected:

  • Statesville

  • Mooresville

  • Troutman

  • Lake Norman & Lake Norman State Park

  • Mount Ulla

  • Cleveland

  • Piedmont Research Station

  • Doolie

Hazards & Impacts:

  • Gusty winds may knock down small tree limbs and blow around unsecured outdoor items.

  • Minor hail damage to plants, vehicles, and other exposed objects is possible.

  • Heavy rainfall is occurring with this storm and could lead to localized flash flooding, especially in low-lying and poor drainage areas.

  • Avoid driving through flooded roads — turn around, don’t drown.

  • Secure or bring inside any loose outdoor items.
