After several days of stormy, humid conditions, Rowan County is set to continue in an unsettled weather pattern this week. Daily thunderstorm chances remain in the forecast, with high humidity, elevated heat index values, and the potential for heavy rainfall. A system expected to form in the Gulf of Mexico may add even more moisture to the mix as we head toward the end of the week.
Daily Heat & Humidity to Fuel Afternoon Storms
We’ll see highs in the upper 80s to low 90s each day, but humidity will make it feel hotter. That steamy air mass will support scattered to widespread thunderstorms each afternoon and evening.
-
Sunday & Monday: General thunderstorm chances (20–30 percent). Most activity will be isolated, but any storm could produce locally heavy rain and gusty winds.
-
Tuesday through Thursday: Rain and storm chances increase to 60–80 percent. Coverage will be greater, and some storms may produce frequent lightning, flooding downpours, and isolated strong wind gusts.
What’s Keeping Us Unsettled?
-
A moisture-rich air mass remains in place over the Carolinas.
-
Daily daytime heating and upper-level disturbances are triggering storm development.
-
With little wind to move storms quickly, slow-moving or training storms could lead to localized flooding, especially in areas that have already seen heavy rain over the past week.
Tropical Outlook: Watching the Gulf
The National Hurricane Center is monitoring the potential development of a low-pressure system in the northeastern Gulf of Mexico.
“A trough of low pressure is likely to form near the southeastern U.S. coast during the next day or two and then move westward across Florida into the northeastern Gulf by Tuesday. Environmental conditions could support some gradual development during the middle to late part of the week.”

-
Formation chance through 48 hours: Low (0 percent)
-
Formation chance through 7 days: Low (20 percent)
Even if this system does not become a named storm, it may still enhance Gulf moisture, which could eventually reach the Carolinas later in the week. That would lead to:
-
Higher rain chances
-
Potential for prolonged periods of heavy rainfall
-
Slightly cooler temps under more persistent cloud cover
What to Watch For
-
Localized flooding, especially in poor-drainage areas or where storms repeatedly track.
-
Dangerous lightning, especially during peak heating hours (mid to late afternoon).
-
Evolving tropical system, which could increase rainfall and storm coverage late in the week depending on its track.
