Wednesday, July 9, 2025 - 7:52pm

Wednesday, July 9, 2025 – 7:45 PM
The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Advisory for Rowan, Iredell, and Davie counties due to excessive rainfall from slow-moving thunderstorms this evening.

What’s Happening:

Radar and rain gauges show 1 to 2 inches of rain have already fallen between 7:00 and 7:45 PM, especially in a corridor stretching from Troutman and Doolie to Mount Ulla, Cleveland, Woodleaf, Cooleemee, and Advance. Thunderstorms are training over the same areas, leading to excessive runoff and minor flooding concerns.

Flooding Impacts (Now Through 10:45 PM):

  • Nuisance to minor flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas

  • Water over some roadways, especially low-water crossings

  • Standing water in parking lots, underpasses, parks, golf courses, and greenways

  • Potential for culvert washouts or small debris blockages

Greatest Areas of Concern:

In Rowan County:

  • North Second Creek (Mount Ulla to Woodleaf):
Including White Rd, Lyerly Rd, Upright Rd, Graham Rd, Hall Rd, Childers Rd, and Bear Poplar Rd

In Iredell County:

  • Third Creek area (east of Statesville):
Including Shiloh Rd, Triplett Rd, Third Creek Church Rd, and Carson Rd

Urbanized flood-prone areas:

  • Eastern Statesville, Cleveland, and Cooleemee may experience deep ponding on roads due to poor drainage.

Additional Rain Expected:

Another 2 to 3 inches of rain is possible over the next 60 to 90 minutes. If storm activity continues or intensifies, a Flash Flood Warning may be issued.

Safety Recommendations:

  • Never drive through flooded roads – “Turn around, don’t drown.”

  • Monitor creeks and low-water crossings for rapid rises

  • Seek higher ground if water levels are rising

  • Have a plan in place in case conditions worsen quickly
