A line of intense thunderstorms is tracking across the western Piedmont this evening, bringing frequent lightning and very heavy rainfall to parts of northern Rowan County and neighboring areas.
At 7:16 PM, Doppler radar showed a cluster of storms stretching from just south of Newton to north of Salisbury, moving east at approximately 20 mph. This storm line is expected to impact multiple communities between now and 7:45 PM, including:
-
Salisbury
-
Statesville
-
Newton
-
Mocksville
-
Hickory
-
Mooresville
-
Conover
-
Maiden
-
Spencer
-
Troutman
What to Expect:
-
Intense lightning: Frequent cloud-to-ground strikes are occurring across the area. If you’re outside, seek shelter immediately.
-
Heavy rainfall: Rain rates could reach up to 2 inches per hour, especially in areas where storms linger or train.
-
Localized flooding: Poor drainage areas like low-lying roads, underpasses, and small streams could flood quickly.
Safety Precautions:
-
Avoid flooded roads – "Turn around, don’t drown."
-
Seek higher ground if water levels rise near you.
-
Unplug electronics and avoid using wired devices during the storm.
-
Stay away from windows, and do not shower or bathe until the lightning threat has passed.
This storm cluster is part of a broader setup expected to bring multiple rounds of showers and storms into tonight. Conditions remain favorable for additional cells to develop later this evening.
Rowan County Weather will continue to monitor the radar closely and provide updates if these storms strengthen or if warnings are issued.
Stay weather aware — and if you can hear thunder, you’re close enough to be struck by lightning.
