Tropical Storm Chantal made landfall overnight near the South Carolina coast and is now weakening as it moves inland. While the storm’s core remains well east of Rowan County, we are still seeing indirect impacts today and tonight in the form of gusty winds, cloud cover, and rounds of rain.
Rain Chances Increase into the Afternoon
Rain is expected to become more widespread later this afternoon and evening, especially after 3 p.m. Scattered thunderstorms are also possible, and some downpours may briefly reduce visibility or produce localized ponding on roads. However, the bulk of the heaviest rain remains well to our east.
Forecast rainfall totals for Rowan County range between a half and three-quarters of an inch through early Monday morning. For comparison, areas closer to the I-95 corridor could see 1 to 3 inches of rain and face localized flash flooding.
Storm Prediction Center Outlook: General Thunderstorm Risk
Rowan County is included in a general thunderstorm risk today according to the Storm Prediction Center. This means there is no organized severe weather threat, but isolated storms could still produce lightning, brief heavy rain, and occasional gusty winds.
Winds and Temperatures
Breezy conditions are expected through the day, especially in the eastern parts of the county. Winds from the north-northeast could gust as high as 20 to 25 miles per hour during the afternoon, before easing overnight. Highs today will remain in the low 80s under mostly cloudy skies.
Looking Ahead
By Monday, Tropical Storm Chantal will be long gone, and a more typical summer weather pattern will return. Temperatures will rise into the low 90s, and afternoon thunderstorm chances will gradually increase as the week progresses.
At this time, no watches or warnings are in effect for Rowan County. Rowan County Weather will continue to monitor conditions and provide updates if anything changes.
