advertise your local business here »The National Hurricane Center is monitoring a broad area of low pressure that may try to organize near the Southeast U.S. coast over the next few days. While there’s no immediate threat to Rowan County, it’s a system worth watching—especially as many residents prepare for 4th of July travel to the beach.
Where is the system now?
As of early Wednesday morning, the disturbance hasn’t developed yet. However, forecasters expect a frontal boundary to stall near the Atlantic and Gulf coasts by this weekend. Under the right conditions, this stalled front could give rise to a tropical or subtropical low.
What are the chances of development?
According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC):
-
Chance of development in the next 48 hours: Near 0 percent
-
Chance of development over the next 7 days: 40 percent (Medium)
That means a depression could slowly form this weekend or early next week, but conditions will have to cooperate for it to happen.
What would the impacts be?
At this point, heavy rainfall appears to be the most likely concern, particularly along the west-central Florida coast and parts of the Deep South. Even without full development, tropical moisture can cause localized flooding and gusty storms.
For inland areas like Rowan County, the impact depends heavily on the track and timing. Right now, most guidance shows the system staying near the coast and moving very little over the weekend.
What should you do?
There is no immediate action needed here in Rowan County, but:
-
Keep up with forecast updates if you're headed to the Carolina or Florida coast this weekend
-
Know that holiday travel weather could become more unsettled for beach destinations
-
Watch for enhanced rain chances to possibly return early next week, depending on how this system evolves
We’ll continue to monitor it and post updates if there are any major changes.
