Strong Thunderstorm Approaching Northwestern Cabarrus and Southwestern Rowan Counties

A developing thunderstorm is moving slowly northward this afternoon and is expected to impact portions of northwestern Cabarrus, southeastern Iredell, north central Mecklenburg, and southwestern Rowan counties through 5:00 PM.

Current Storm Status

As of 4:23 PM, Doppler radar was tracking a strong thunderstorm near Huntersville, drifting north at just 5 mph. The storm is producing wind gusts up to 40 mph and pea-size hail. Frequent cloud-to-ground lightning has also been observed.

Areas That May Be Affected

This slow-moving storm could impact the following locations:

  • Huntersville

  • Kannapolis

  • Downtown Concord & West Concord

  • Cornelius

  • Mooresville

  • Davidson

  • Harrisburg

  • China Grove

  • Landis

What to Expect

  • Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs or blow around loose outdoor items.

  • Minor hail damage is possible to vehicles and other outdoor objects.

  • Cloud-to-ground lightning could pose a threat to outdoor activities, even several miles from the storm core.

Safety Recommendations

  • If you’re outside or near water, move indoors immediately.

  • Remember, lightning can strike up to 10 miles from the storm.

  • Stay off elevated areas like rooftops, and avoid tall isolated trees.

  • Secure outdoor furniture or decorations that could become wind-driven hazards.
