Heat Advisory Issued for Rowan County: What You Need to Know

Monday, June 23, 2025 - 2:14pm

The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory for Rowan County and much of the region, including the Piedmont and foothills of western North Carolina. The advisory is in effect from 12:00 PM Tuesday through 8:00 PM Wednesday.

What’s Expected

  • Heat index values up to 108°F

  • Oppressive humidity combined with temperatures in the upper 90s

  • Little overnight relief, with lows only in the mid to upper 70s

These conditions can quickly lead to heat exhaustion or heat stroke, especially for vulnerable groups such as the elderly, young children, outdoor workers, and those without access to air conditioning.

What Is a Heat Advisory?

A Heat Advisory is issued when the combination of high temperatures and humidity makes it feel dangerously hot. In our region, that threshold typically begins when heat index values reach or exceed 105°F.

This advisory covers Tuesday and Wednesday, which are expected to be the two hottest and most uncomfortable days of the week.

Precautionary Steps You Should Take

  • Stay indoors during the hottest part of the day (12 PM to 6 PM)

  • Hydrate frequently, even if you don’t feel thirsty

  • Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing

  • Avoid strenuous outdoor activity, or reschedule to early morning or evening

  • Never leave children or pets unattended in vehicles – even for a short time

  • Check on elderly neighbors or those without air conditioning

Relief May Be Slow to Arrive

The heat is being fueled by a strong upper-level ridge, which will begin to weaken late Wednesday into Thursday. Until then, expect very warm, muggy conditions even overnight. A few isolated afternoon thunderstorms may develop each day, but most locations will remain dry.
