By Steve Monday, Chief Forecaster – Rowan County Weather
After a stretch of seasonably warm days, the heat is about to crank up across Rowan County — and it’s sticking around for much of the week. A strong upper-level ridge continues to build over the eastern U.S., pushing daytime highs into the mid to upper 90s with heat index values approaching 100 degrees or higher.
Forecast at a Glance:
-
Monday: High near 95 degrees, heat index up to 100 degrees
-
Tuesday – Thursday: Highs 96 to 98 degrees, heat index may exceed 100 degrees, especially near I-85
-
Overnight lows: Staying in the low to mid 70s, offering little relief
Why It’s Happening:
A stubborn upper ridge — essentially a dome of hot air — is settling in over the Carolinas. This feature limits cloud cover and rainfall while allowing heat and humidity to build day after day. As we move deeper into the week, the urban heat island effect in cities like Salisbury will make nighttime conditions feel even more oppressive.
Heat Advisory Outlook:
While official Heat Advisories begin at a heat index of 105 degrees, some parts of Rowan County could get close to that threshold — especially Tuesday and Wednesday. Right now, confidence is moderate that we’ll stay just below advisory levels, but we’re watching it closely.
Staying Safe:
-
Limit outdoor activities between 12 PM and 6 PM
-
Drink plenty of water — don’t wait until you’re thirsty
-
Check on pets, elderly neighbors, and anyone without air conditioning
-
Never leave children or pets in vehicles, even briefly
We’ll keep tracking the heat and provide daily updates, including the chance for isolated afternoon storms as we move toward the weekend. Stay weather-aware and take care of yourself during this extended stretch of hot weather.
