The Ridge Effect: What’s Blocking Rain from Reaching Rowan County?

While June is often known for pop-up thunderstorms and humid afternoons, Rowan County is heading into a notably dry stretch—with little to no rain expected through at least the middle of next week.

So what’s keeping those summer showers away?

The Answer: A Ridge of High Pressure

A ridge is a large area of high atmospheric pressure that acts like a dome over the region. Air within a ridge sinks, which warms and dries the atmosphere, making it very difficult for clouds and storms to develop.

This particular ridge has built in from the Southern Plains and will hold firm over the Southeast through early next week.

How It Affects Rowan County:

  • Dry Skies: Even with intense heat and daytime heating, the ridge keeps rain chances near zero

  • Hotter Temperatures: The sinking air acts like a lid, allowing heat to build beneath it. Expect highs near 96–97° by Monday and Tuesday

  • Stagnant Conditions: Light winds and limited cloud cover mean poor air circulation, which can affect air quality and raise pollen levels

Why It Matters:

While sunny skies are great for weekend plans, this pattern has downsides:

  • Soil dries out quickly, which can stress lawns and gardens

  • Increased mosquito activity near any leftover standing water

  • Air quality may degrade, especially under high heat and limited wind

  • Fire danger can increase in rural and wooded areas if dry conditions persist

“When we say a ridge is ‘blocking’ rain, that’s exactly what it’s doing,” explains Steve Monday, Chief Forecaster for Rowan County Weather. “It prevents vertical motion in the atmosphere, and without rising air, you just don’t get the storm development we’re used to seeing this time of year.”

When Could Rain Return?

Current model trends suggest the ridge may weaken or shift westward later next week. That could open the door for afternoon showers and thunderstorms to return, possibly by Thursday or Friday—but confidence remains low for now.

Until then, expect hot, sunny, and mostly rain-free days across Rowan County.
