After a brief drop in humidity late this week, Rowan County is gearing up for a surge of heat and humidity starting Sunday and likely lasting well into next week. This early summer heat wave could push heat index values into the upper 90s and low 100s, especially during the afternoon hours.

Now is the time to prepare—before the worst of the heat arrives.

What to Expect

  • Sunday through at least Wednesday:
Highs in the mid-90s, with heat index values often exceeding 100 degrees

  • Overnight lows only falling into the low to mid-70s, offering little relief

  • Increasing humidity levels due to persistent southwest flow off the Gulf

The National Weather Service is already watching for potential heat advisories by early next week.

Preparing Now Makes a Difference

Before the heat wave arrives, take these steps:

  • Check your air conditioning system – Make sure it’s running efficiently. Clean filters, check vents, and call a technician if needed.

  • Stock up on bottled water, fans, and cooling items – Heat-related supplies can go fast once the heat sets in.

  • Make a plan for vulnerable individuals – Elderly family members, young children, and pets are especially at risk.

  • Plan outdoor chores for early morning or evening – Avoid working outside during the heat of the day.

Heat Safety Reminders

When the heat wave hits, keep these precautions in mind:

  • Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you’re not thirsty.

  • Avoid strenuous outdoor activity between 11 AM and 5 PM.

  • Use air conditioning or visit a cooling center if you don’t have one at home.

  • Never leave children or pets in vehicles. Temperatures inside cars can rise dangerously fast.

  • Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing and use sunscreen if outside.

Know the Signs of Heat Illness

Be alert to the symptoms of heat exhaustion or heat stroke:

  • Heat Exhaustion: Heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, nausea, headache

  • Heat Stroke (Emergency): High body temperature, confusion, rapid pulse, and no sweating — Call 911 immediately

Looking Ahead

While the timing may still shift slightly, most forecast models agree:
